Summer heat and older people: practical everyday support
·01Adjust the day to the temperature
On hot days, even short journeys can be exhausting. Arrange shopping and appointments for cooler hours where possible. Before going out together, ask whether breaks are needed and where shade or a seat is available. Heavy bags need not be carried alone when help is at hand.
At home, curtains or blinds can keep out direct sun during the day. Ventilate when it is cooler outside than indoors. Keep drinks within reach. Suitable fluid intake depends on health conditions and medical advice; ask a professional if you are unsure.
·02A simple plan for hot days
- Who will check in briefly during particularly hot weather?
- Are drinks, light meals and essential groceries available?
- Could an appointment be moved or accompanied?
- Who has the right emergency contacts?
Marked weakness, confusion, circulatory problems or a clear change in condition call for medical assessment. In an emergency in Germany, call 112. Everyday assistance can make trips and errands easier, but it cannot provide a medical assessment.
