Preparing for a medical appointment: a practical checklist
·01Before the appointment
A medical appointment begins long before the waiting room. Finding documents, arranging transport and explaining symptoms at the same time can be stressful. One sheet of paper helps: write down the time, address, route, contact person and the three questions that matter most.
Bring any relevant reports, an up-to-date medication list, health insurance card and referral if required. Record when a change started and how it developed, using your own words. New or severe symptoms should be assessed by a medical professional promptly rather than waiting for a planned accompaniment.
·02Agree on the role of a companion
Someone can help with the journey, finding the right place and taking notes. Decide beforehand whether they will also join the consultation. The patient decides what to discuss and who may hear it. Everyday assistance does not replace medical advice or nursing care.
- Which questions do I want to ask myself?
- What information may my companion hear?
- Who will organise the return journey and any follow-up?
- Where will the documents be kept afterwards?
·03Afterwards, capture the next steps
At home, write down what needs doing next, such as arranging a follow-up or collecting a report. If medical instructions are unclear, ask the practice for clarification instead of guessing.
